The purpose of the Carlsberg Laboratory is defined in paragraph 1 of the charter of the laboratory, as originally defined by the founder of Carlsberg, J.C. Jacobsen:

“The principal task of The Carlsberg Laboratory shall be to develop as complete a scientific basis as possible for malting, brewing and fermenting operations.”

Today this integrates a broad range of Natural Sciences - Chemistry, Biochemistry, Physiology, Genetics and Molecular Biology - for scientific advancement in fields like brewing, breeding and biotechnology.

Importantly, J.C. Jacobsen also stated and imprinted on the wall in gold letters that:

"No result of the Laboratory’s activities which is of theoretical or practical importance shall be kept secret."
